The PEAR installer also helps coordinate a team of web developers in two ways:

Discrete packaging

File conflict resolution

Discrete packaging simply means that each developer or sub-team's set of files can occupy its own package and be installed/upgraded independently of the others. In addition, they can all be managed from a central package using dependencies.

File conflict resolution solves the potential for accidentally overwriting files from another team and makes it possible to share directory space safely. The PEAR installer does not allow different packages to conflict with any files from other packages. This simple technical fact will augment your team's file naming conventions with an additional layer of error-checking.

Even when the --force option is specified, file conflict resolution is used. Only the dangerous --ignore-errors option overrides file conflict checking.
